Il jersey è una stoffa realizzata a maglia ed il nome è usato per individuare molti prodotti di maglieria realizzati industrialmente.

Il tessuto risulta elastico nelle due dimensioni e può essere prodotto con molte fibre tessili tra cui il cotone, la lana, il lino e la viscosa. Possono essere impiegate fibre di elastan o lycra, nel qual caso l’elasticità risulta superiore.
Verso la fine del XIX secolo, il “jersey” era un tessuto molto usato dai pescatori dell’isola inglese di Jersey nel del Canale della Manica. Considerato inadatto alla sartoria, fu  utilizzato nella produzione di biancheria.

Nel 1916 la stilista Coco Chanel comprò una partita di jersey dall’industriale Jean Rodier e lo utilizzò per le sue realizzazioni di capi da donna. Da quel momento il jersey diventò uno dei protagonisti fra i tessuti di moda ed ancora oggi Coco Chanel è nota per le sue creazioni realizzate con questo materiale.

Il jersey viene utilizzato sia per l’abbigliamento maschile che femminile. Elastico, morbido e traspirante, è adatto anche ai capi sportivi e persino alle calzature. Trova impiego anche nelle fodere e come sostegno per le tecnofibre.

The jersey is made of knitted fabric, and the name is used to identify many of knitwear products industrially manufactured. The fabric is elastic in the two dimensions and can be produced with many textile fibers including cotton, wool, linen and viscose. Fibers like elastane or lycra can be employed. In this case the elasticity is higher.

Towards the end of the nineteenth century the “jersey” was a fabric widely used by English fishermen of the island of Jersey, in the English Channel. Considered unsuitable for tailoring it was used in the production of linen. In 1916 the fashion designer Coco Chanel bought the jersey by the industrial Jean Rodier and used it for her accomplishments for women. Since then, the jersey became one of the leaders among the fashion fabrics and even Coco Chanel is known today for her jersey creations.

The jersey is used for both male and female clothing. Elastic, soft and breathable, it is also suitable for sports clothing and even to footwear. It is also used in linings and support for tecnifibre.
